| By far the most
lucrative derby on the Kenai Peninsula, the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby
offers monthly prizes of $1000, $750, $500 and $250 as well as the final
"jackpot" based on the number of entries received over the summer.
One year the final prize totaled $32,000 for the over 300 pound winner.
You can also fish for 'tagged fish' which net various cash amounts to
the lucky angler. The derby runs from May 1 to Labor Day. Ninilchik hosts its own version of the Halibut Derby
with categories for halibut caught by vessels under 16 feet and 16 feet
and over. Prizes are given weekly with a final prize for each category
awarded at the summer-end banquet. This derby runs from June 13 to Labor
Day with entry fees. The Seldovia Sportfishing Derby offers monthly and
derby-end prizes for halibut as well as king salmon, Dolly Vardon
and the famed Irish Lord. Fish can be caught by boat or from shore.

During the fresh water king salmon fisheries in the
lower peninsula rivers, anglers have derby options at Anchor River and
the Deep Creek-Ninilchik river area. The Anchor River King Salmon Derby runs for five consecutive
weekends beginning Memorial Day weekend and offers weekly prizes as
well as the final prizes for first, second and third. Tickets are available
with weekend, season and family discounts, and are available at local
tackle shop. There are also mini-derbies sponsored by the Anchor Point
Chamber of Commerce which run during the same time frame. Anchor Point also hosts a salt water king salmon derby
which runs through August 7 for fish caught between Diamond Creek and
Stariski Creek. The normal array of prizes abounds with a special drawing
at the finish which gives all ticket purchasers a chance at 10 percent
of the derby proceeds. Ninilchik and Deep Creek anglers can participate in
the Ninilchik King Salmon Derby which runs May 1 through June 15 and
offers prizes in fresh and salt water caught kings. Other Species Derbies are also offered for other species of salmon
and trout during the summer and anglers should check with local shops
